Debate !

Posted by Vasagi

Dear fren, previous two week there are debate about National-type Tamil school was changing their science and maths subject from Tamil language to English but the Chinese national types school was using both Chinese and English to do their exam. Actually, these statements are true accordind to the research below:

(From wikipidea )
Primary
There are two main types of public primary schools in Malaysia: national (Sekolah Kebangsaan in Malay, abbreviated as SK) and national-type (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan, abbreviated as SJK). National-type schools are further divided into Chinese national-type schools (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina, SJK(C)) and Tamil national-type schools (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil, SJK(T)). By degree of government funding, national schools are government-operated, while national-type schools are mostly government-assisted, though some are government-operated.
The medium of instruction is Malay for SK, Mandarin and simplified Chinese characters writing for SJK(C), and Tamil for SJK(T). Malay and English are compulsory subjects in all schools. All schools use the same syllabus for non-language subjects regardless of the medium of instruction. In January 2003, a mixed medium of instruction was introduced so that students would learn Science and Mathematics in English. Due to pressure from the Chinese community, SJK(C) teach Science and Mathematics in both English and Chinese. However, the government reversed the policy of teaching Science and Mathematics in English in July 2009, and previous languages of instruction will be reintroduced in stages from 2012.[5]

Question 2

Group members name:
1)Teo wai fong
2)Tan Fei Lein
3)Chong Siow Lee
4)Jushua Meta Anak Nully
5)Vasagi Natarajan

2 a) Explain the different types of primary schools.
•National school (sek Rendah kebangsaan )Malay school
•National type school( SJK (C) ) Chinese National-type schools & Tamil National-type schools ( SJK (T))
•Religion school

b) What is the medium of instruction in these schools?
1) National school-The medium that used is Malay language
2) National types schools:
•Chinese National-type schools: (medium of instruction is Chinese)
•Tamil National-type schools ( medium of instruction is Tamil)

c) What are the different examinations students have to sit for in the primary school and what is the reason for these exams?

The examinations students have to sit for in the primary school is UPSR (standard 6).
In primary school standard 6 students only take 5 subjects in UPSR examination. Students in National school, the subjects tested are Malay comprehension, written Malay, English, Science and Mathematics. .
The national type school such like Chinese National-type schools do exam in both English and Chinese language.
The Tamil National-type schools students take 7 subjects in UPSR examinations. The subjects tested are Tamil comprehension, written Tamil, Malay comprehension, written Malay, English, Science and Mathematics in English.

d) What happens when a student fails in Year 2 or in one of the national examinations in the primary school?

If year two students fail they can continue their students to standard three. The national examination in the primary school is UPSR examination. The Malay subject is the compulsory subject to pass to get certificate and help students to enter form 1 directly. If the students from national type school such like Tamil and Chinese school students fail in Malay subject, they need to enter transition class (kelas peralihan ). Then only they can enter form one classes . The national school is a special case because although , the student is fail in the Malay language they directly can enter form 1 classes.

e)If a year one student is a genius, will he be promoted to year 3 or 6?Yes/No. Give reasons. What would you do if your child is a genius?
No. If the student year one is genius, he suppose to be follow the procedure to enter standard two first. This is because the subject that teaches in year 1 is easier than year 3 or 6. It’s good to the child to continue his/her studies without jump two year.
In my opinion, if the child is genius I will make sure the child to enter year by year. Its help him to gain more knowledge and help his weak classmates.

f) What is the importance of getting at least 6 years of primary school education?
The importance of getting at least 6 years of primary school education is to become expect in 3R’s such like reading, writing and arithmetic. They know basic knowledge to continue their life journey like calculating when buy things, see time and so on. Its help they to recognize in what level there are in and try to improve their level. The students become good in communication skills. They know how to communicate with their friends and teachers.

nanthini:as we all did in a group discussion today, we all support for the both language which is english and bahasa malaysia.it is because, both language are equally important to our country.why????? here i posted the reasons why my group members support both language.

<>
*we use as a medium of instruction in univercity level(tertiary education),*it is also world wide language ,*easy for the international students who came here and continue higher level of education,*as we know we can improve english language level which is plus point for get a job, speaking skills.writting skills,*upgrade the quality level of malaysian education system when use english language.
<>
*our national language,*compulsory subject in malaysian examination system, if fail bahasa malaysia we wont be get the spm certificate,*not all malaysian people understand english language and not able to speak very well, but all malaysian able to speak in malay language,*we must give important our nationallanguage so that our national language wont be extince.SALAM 1 MALAYSIA....

in my opinion philosopyh and education have close relationship because what we learn in philosopyh or what we learn in education is related with each other.in philosopyh we study about the truth, belief, its a way of life.in education we learn about it in details.so that philosopyh and education have strong relationship.if we do not study about philosopyh we do not know what kind of thing that related in education.

Malaysian education system

Discussion on The Malaysian Education System and the Changes.
1.The Malaysian education system was shaped by the Razak Report(1956)also known as the Education Ordinance(1957).

2.Before independence, education was not regulated as a unitary system. Each race provided education services to their own people through their own social or religious entities. Thus the emergence of vernacular schools.
The British government on the other hand created their own missionary schools.
The main achievement of the Education Ordinance(1957)was to provide the nation with an education system that would unify all races.

3.In 1960 another bill was introduced(the Rahman Talib Report)which was enacted as the Education Act(1961).

4.The Mahatir Report(1979)saw a major educational reform taking place.Among the major contributions of this bill was the introduction of the Kurikulum Baru Sekolah Rendah(KBSR),which was later renamed as the Kurikulum Bersepadu Sekolah Rendah(the integrated Primary School Curriculum)to reflect the integrated nature of the curriculum. The KBSR was introduced nationwide in 1983 and the secondary school curriculum that followed was known as the Kurikulum Bersepadu Sekolah Menengah(KBSM)or the Integrated Secondary School Curriculum, which was introduced in 1989.

5.The educational reform introduced in the Mahatir Report(1979)was greatly influenced by the progressivist philosophy. This teaching philosophy moves away from the traditionally popular perennialist view(before independence). The emphasis moves away from the teacher to the learner.

6.The KBSR and KBSM advocated a learner-centred teaching approach.

7.The development of smart schools through the enactment of the EducationAct 1996 saw another shift in the teaching philosophy. The emphasis moved from the learner to learning. The reason for this shift was due to the shift in the structure of the economy from an industrial to a knowledge-based economy.

8.The shift from the learner to the learning –centred philosophy was not a major change like the move from the teacher-centred philosophy to the learner-centred teaching philosophy.Instead we see a shift from an emphasis on the learner as a democratic citizen(having their own rights to self-determination and freedom of choice)to an emphasis on the learning process of the individual students, especially in their learning habits and learning styles.

9.The emphasis on the learning process will see a change in the teaching approaches. The role of the teacher is now expanded from a facilitator to a manager of learning.

10.The 4 features of the constructivist teaching philosophy:a)learners construct their own meaning b)new learning builds on prior knowledge c)learning is enhanced by social interaction d)meaningful learning develops through ‘authentic’ tasks.

guyz a small thought of mine....

hi frenz n madam i hv a thought and think about why dont the education system is not influenced by politics like wat we having nw... we hv ministry of education bt in my point of view our education system still not stable and corrupted... i hv a suggestion  that only for education we dont need a political influnce or a ministry bt then an open board.. what i mean by that is in this portfolio need professionals for conduct our education system and will be more systematic and stable... our country have a lot of professionals that hv been in this area... moreover the education policies will be more strong and stable with professional views.... like hw we can see in our countries education system always have changes that effect the students mainly and also the teachers... this must change....! what you all think about this?? lets discuss about this...

forum>>>idea

nanthini:hi frens,i have did research regarding d forum question and i found d answer... but can any1 explain 2 me what d answer trying tel????

answer:
The philosophy of education is the study of the purpose, process, nature and ideals of education. As a matter of daily practice, educators formulate goals, discuss values, and set priorities. Anyone who gets involved in dealing with goals, values and priorities soon realizes that in a modern society such as ours there are many competing choices. Some are incompatible with others. Hard decisions have to be made. Here, for example, are some everyday dilemmas that educators confront: How do we treat a specific student's needs, yet deal fairly with a class of students as a whole? When, if ever, should we bend the rules? Should a teacher ever emphasize good behavior over subject skills? It is in trying to resolve such questions that the discussion becomes philosophical, even though it may not be recognized as such. And it is philosophy that can help us make better choices among goals, values and priorities REF # ary K. Clabaugh & Edward G. Rozycki, Understanding Schools: the foundations of education (New York: Harper Rowe, 1990) pp. 551- 564
